How to Stay Warm (and Cute) in the Winter

{Wearing: Forever 21 sweater, Target jeans and scarf, Half and Half hat and sunglasses, UGG gloves, Naya boots}

Happy February! This isn’t usually anyone’s favorite month. It’s the middle of winter and it feels like we haven’t felt the sun in a hundred years. I know it’s only been a couple months, but sometimes it feels like years. I wrote this post in December about preparing for the winter blues with different fun winter activities, but now I’m going to write about the style side of it. If you’re someone who appreciates fashion, it can be hard to get inspiration in the winter months. You feel like you’re always wearing the same thing over and over again and keep ruining your cute shoes with snow and salt.

Plus even though there are stylish winter options out there, it’s not as easy to throw together creative outfits when you have to wear layer upon layer upon layer. My friends all make fun of me because whenever I leave a class in college, it takes me 5 minutes just to put all my layers on. I mean, I’m probably abnormally slow but I’m sure some can relate! Here are my top 5 tips on staying cute in the cold!

  1. Stock up on cute accessories

This is the most important tip because these accessories are what will keep you the warmest. Generally, once the weather gets below 40 degrees, I never leave my apartment without a scarf, hat, and gloves. I walk a lot on the days I have class so I have to stay pretty bundled up. These accessories make the biggest difference in keeping myself warm. I highly recommend investing in a blanket scarf (doubles as a blanket if you get cold inside) and really nice gloves. I have had these UGG gloves since about 7th grade and they keep my hands toasty even on the coldest of days. They’re pretty much just UGG boots for your hands.

2. Oversized sweaters are your best friend

They’re so comfy! Not only are they warm, but you can easily layer a long sleeve shirt underneath for double the warmth. I wear this sweater every day, it’s getting kind of ridiculous, but it is the comfiest thing I’ve ever owned. I wear it with gray sweatpants as soon as I get home every night.

3. You can have your dresses and wear them too

I think people assume that you can’t wear dresses in the winter because they’re too cold, but that’s not really the case. Fleece-lined tights are amazing and actually much warmer than jeans, as they trap your body heat close to your body, and jeans can get really cold. So now, you can wear dresses and sweaters and this opens up outfit options much more.

4. Invest in a timeless coat

Even though coats can hide an outfit, they can also make one. Trenchcoats, for example, are an iconic staple of Parisian fashion and pull so many smart looking outfits together. It’s probably too cold for a trench, but a nice down coat or wool peacoat can make even the plainest of outfits look better. This is actually a style trick if you don’t want to think too hard about your outfit. Just invest in a really nice coat and this will be your statement piece whenever you go out. Plus, you can wear the same coat every day so you really only need to buy one.

5. The right kind of boot

Of course, you can always wear functional winter boots, like Sorel of L.L. Bean, but if you’re looking for something a little more streamlined, there are other options. I like to wear taller booties. These ones I’m wearing cover my ankle and a bit of leg so they keep my feet really warm while still being stylish. If wearing suede or leather, make sure you use a protectant so the salt from the street doesn’t leave stains (those are really hard to remove). You don’t have to put away all of your fall booties, you just might have to take a little extra care of them.

Of course, you can wear whatever you want, and the number one priority should be comfort! My main goal with what I wear is to stay true to my style and always be comfortable. Hope these tips were helpful! Let me know how you stay warm in the comments!

Love, Francesca
