It’s mid-December and it’s pretty clear we’re in for an intense winter in Buffalo. White-outs, several feet of snow, 10 degree days, overcast skies…sound familiar? After the bustle of Christmas is over, winter blues affects a lot of people and it can be hard to handle. When it’s cold and snowy, sometimes it can be hard to leave the house. I’m compiled a list of fun winter activities that I’ll try to do one from every weekend so I stay positive and can enjoy the season.

I think it’s easy to fall into a routine of going to work or school, coming home and staying in all night watching movies or just chilling. Though this is one of my favorite activities, the routine of it can drive one mad. In the summer, there are always lots of things going on and the weather’s beautiful, and you can go on walks and bike rides and sunshine and happiness yaaaay…. but in the winter you have to work a little bit harder to find the fun. It’s there, you just gotta look for it. These are great activities to do with friends, as a date, with family or just by yourself! They’re also either free or pretty inexpensive, which is a huge plus if you’re a student like me.

Really-Super-Awesome-Inexpensive-Fun Winter Activities:

  • Ice skating– I’m obsessed with ice skating. Like obsessed, I could go for hours. I think this is an amazing winter activity and I look forward to it every year. In Buffalo, there’s the Canalside Ice Rink, an adorable and large outdoor rink with beautiful views of the lake and city. It also has a hot chocolate stand (important) and is right next to a Tim Hortons. There’s also Rotary Rink at Fountain Plaza downtown that I have not been to yet but am trying out as soon as possible! It looks so cute. Just remember, if temperatures reach around 45 degrees, they usually close down.
  • Sledding– Embrace the child in you and go sledding! Guaranteed great time. Just wear snow pants and extremely warm everything because nothing ruins sledding more than getting cold and wet. There are tons of hills on the outskirts of the city that are perfect for sledding, you just have to drive around and find them.
  • Christmas Light Sight-Seeing – This is a really fun one especially because some people put so much time and effort into their Christmas lights, so the least you can do is appreciate them. Plus this is just a fun time to drive around and talk.
  • Shopping– Shopping is fun all year round but in the winter you have even more of an excuse to spend your day inside at a mall, and there are lots of cute things to see. Visiting small shops on Elmwood, Hertel, or East Aurora is not only a great way to spend a morning but also support local business. Plus you can try out new small cafes which are my favorite places ever!
  • Going out to the movies– there are a lot of really great movies coming out now! The new Star Wars movie Rogue One is out now for nerds like me out there. La La Land has been getting a lot of hype and looks pretty great! Also, a lot of theaters have reclining seats now which is a major improvement! The AMC theater in Amherst and the Regal at the Walden Galleria both do, but this means they have less seating so you should order your tickets ahead of time. I’ve learned my lesson through many disappointing Friday nights.
  • Tubing– this one is bit more adventurous but I’m totally down! Holiday Valley offers tubing for just $20 for three hours. This is a cheaper and easier alternative to skiing and snowboarding, but those are great options too.
  • Crafting– If you have to stay indoors, you might as well be productive! Making crafts and DIY projects is a lot easier in the winter when you tend to be less busy. Lauren Conrad has a really nice website full of cute DIYS, as well as Martha Stewart. Or just check out Pinterest, which is where I find a lot of my favorite crafts.
  • Cooking & Baking– Dave and I have both gotten much better at cooking since moving in together, but we still have a long way to go. Cooking is not only delicious, but a fun, warm activity that can be nice for couples, friends, or yourself.
  • Dance class or Yoga class– Another thing I’ve been meaning to do, join a class! I used to take ballet and absolutely loved it so I would love to take that up again or yoga. There are lots of benefits to exercise, but at least one is just giving you something fun to do.

The more I kept writing, the more I realized there are actually lots of things to do over winter! So once Christmas is over (just a couple days left!) don’t feel sad, just pick an activity on this list and start having fun!

Love, Francesca

You have reminded me that I have not done enough winter activities this past year! I haven’t gone skating, nor have I went to check out Christmas lights. It’s been mostly work and more work and now Christmas is this weekend! I’m definitely going to take the time over the winter holidays to enjoy the holiday season a little more!

Beautiful pictures Francesca! I came directly from Instagram to see the whole post here.
I wish we had a little bit of snow in Germany, we got only freezing temperatures and grayness!
Cooking and watching movies I think are my favorite activities for this sort of weather:)
